Havergal History
Our school team names are from local families. Vernon, Giffard, Swynnerton and Havergal from Reverend William Havergal.
The first headmaster who chose the names was called Mr Holdcroft. When the school was first built there were 50 children in the school.
Francis Ridley Havergal was born on December 14th 1836. She was the youngest child of William Havergal's first wife (Jane). She went to Germany with her father and his second wife. She came back and then went again for music studies. People thought she was a brilliant writer of hymns. In 1870 her father died and then 8 years later her father's second wife died. So shortly after she went to South Wales. On June 3rd 1879 she passed away.
Our school is a Christian school because of the Church. The children worked when they were very young but when the government stopped this the churches started to build schools. They wanted children to learn about Jesus so they started Sunday schools. But as they built more schools they started to wonder whether they should have Christian schools, so they did.
Francis Ridley Havergal was a great hymn writer she wrote a hymn called Take my Life. She was a big believer in God and lived life as god would have wanted. We have chosen her hymn Take My Life as our school hymn. That was one of her best songs. She gained a reputation for being a lovely lady and everybody thought she was very friendly.
This is verse six in the school hymn
Take my love;my lord ,I pour
At thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
Ever, only, all for thee
This is the Havergal School creed
This is our school,
Let peace dwell here,
Let the room be full of contentment.
Let love abide here.
Love of one another and love of God.
Let us remember That as many hands build a house
So many hearts make a school.
