Reception Summer Term 1 Curriculum Overview

 
Communication Language and Literacy Problem solving Reasoning and Numeracy Creative Development
*Texts: 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' 'Please Don't Chat to the Bus Driver' text in the village of Shareshill Menus. 'The Train Ride' 'Where the Forest Meets the Sea' and other related texts. *Reading text in the immediate and wider environment and understanding its purpose. *Identifying book terms - author/illustrator/title/cover/page/line etc... *Making predictions about the text from the cover - what do you think the book is about? What do you think might happen? Who do you think are the characters. *Understanding that text is read top to bottom and left to right. *Understanding the difference between a letter and a word. *Understanding letters make words and words make sentences. *Understanding how to compose and write a simple sentence including simple punctuation (capital letter/finger spaces and full stop). *Recognition of Reception key words and beginning to write an increasing amount of these from memory. *Jolly Phonics letter sounds. *Understanding that letters have names and sounds. *Understanding diagraphs - where 2 letters come together to make 1 sound such as 'ai' and 'sh'. *Blending and segmenting words. *Forming letters correctly. *Identifying fiction (story) and non-fiction (information) books. *Understanding that a story has beginning/middle and end. *Understanding about the different ways stories start e.g. 'Once upon a time' and end 'The End' 'They lived happily ever after'. *Using expressive voices when retelling stories e.g. a surprised voice. *Understanding how to write a speech bubble. *Understanding how to write a sign. *using language to recreate roles and experiences in role-play. *Retelling tory Telling Week' at the end of the half-term. *Recognising numbers from 0 to 10 and beyond. *Ordering numbers. *Writing numbers to 10 and beyond. *Counting forwards and backwards in ones. *Counting forwards in twos/fives and tens. *Counting repeated groups of objects e.g. counting pairs of socks in twos 5 pence pieces in fives 10 pence pieces in tens etc... *Recognising simple number patterns on 100 grid. *Using ordinal numbers - first second third...lastlast but one etc... *Using 'more' and 'less' to compare two numbers. *Understanding how to find 1 more/less than a given number up to 10 and being able to say what is 1 more and 1 less up to 10 *Using imagination in art and designing - selecting materials and tools for a purpose in order to create. *Choosing different media - chalk/pens/crayons and paint etc... to create a desired effect. *Selecting appropriate colours. *Using imagination to make a 3D model of a mode of transport. *Using imagination in the role-play area - travel agents airport aeroplane and seaside cafe. *Using percussion instruments to accompany a story. *Singing a variety of songs and learn new ones. *Listening to music and commenting upon what it reminds us of/how it makes us feel. *Moving with imagination to music. *Feeling different speeds of music and moving appropriately. *Understanding about high and low sounds.
 
Personal Social and Emotional Development Knowledge and Understanding of the World Physical Development
*Developing understanding of how to work with and be a good talking partner. *Developing good attitudes to learning - 'have a go!' *Understanding the effects actions have on others. *Reflecting on own feelings and listening to the feelings of others. *Understanding how to be a good listener - keeping still/keeping quiet/looking at the speaker and remembering what the speaker has said. *Understanding that we each have rights and responsibilities e.g. we have the right to be listened to but also have the responsibility to listen to others. *Understanding what is right and wrong and why and applying knowledge to situations. *Understanding about fair and unfair. *Understanding that fair does not always mean equal e.g. if one child wants to make a small monster and one child wants to make a big monster it is okay for one child to have more dough. *Understanding about 'on purpose' actions. *Understanding how to make someone feel better if they are sad/cross or feel something is unfair. *Developing awareness and interest in cultural differences and treating these with respect. *Sharing ideas/feelings and opinions and reflecting during collective worship. *Learning about how the World began and stories Jesus told. *Understanding the use of everyday technology in supporting learning. *Developing mouse control and understanding how to click and drag items on a computer. *Developing mouse control and operating a robotic turtle. *Using computers and non-fiction texts to exploring facts about bears - where they live/what they eat etc... *Looking closely at similarities and differences in the environment. *Understanding 'past' and 'present' and sorting past and present modes of transport. *Identifying features of places visited on holiday and expressing likes and dislikes. *Locating different places around the world using a map. *Understanding about our 5 senses. *Exploring different foods using our senses - Indian/Mexican and Chinese. *Learning about own cultures and beliefs and those of others. Exploring similarities and differences between Christian and Muslim faiths. *Selecting resources and tolls when designing and making boats. *Beginning to understand about forces to move boats - blowing/pushing/pulling etc... *Understanding safety issues such as appropriate dress/environment and space needed. *Understanding the effects of exercise and the need for warm-up and cool-down activities. *Following postional language - on/off/under/over/in/out and across and transfer skills onto apparartus. *Following directions - forwards/backwards/half-turn/full turn/left and right etc... *Changing direction on a signal. *Continuing to develop games skills controlling balls and beanbags - dribbling in between cones passing to a partner aiming for a target etc... Working with a partner to improve skills. *Recognising changes that happen to bodies during exercise - flushed cheeks/feeling hot/heart beating faster/feeling tired/good/thirsty etc... *Developing large motor skills - changes of level/using whole body/changes in speed/travelling actions/body shapes and actions. *Developing fine motor skills - tearing/cutting/finger strengthening and coordinating activities/folding/finger painting/using tweezers/manipulating pipe cleaners/using pegs etc...
